How it works

Follow these 3 simple steps to start automatically tagging subscription orders

Order Created

App connector: Recharge • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This trigger monitors Recharge for new subscription orders and kicks off the workflow whenever a customer's subscription processes a payment.

This step automatically activates when a new order gets created in Recharge, capturing the order data including the external order ID that links to your Shopify store. No configuration is needed since MESA connects directly to your Recharge account through the integration. The trigger passes the Recharge order details to the next step, specifically the external order ID that identifies the corresponding Shopify order.

Retrieve Order

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This step fetches the complete Shopify order details using the order ID from Recharge, ensuring you have all the Shopify order data needed for tagging.

The step automatically queries your Shopify store using the external order ID from the Recharge trigger to pull the full order record. No manual configuration is required since the order ID gets passed automatically from the previous step. This retrieval gives you access to all Shopify order fields including the order ID, customer information, and existing tags, which the final step needs to add the subscription tag.

Order Add Tag

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 1 minute
Why this matters: This step adds the "subscription" tag to the Shopify order, making it easy to identify and filter subscription orders in your Shopify admin.

The step automatically adds a "subscription" tag to the order retrieved in the previous step. The tag value is pre-configured as "subscription" but you can customize this to any tag name that fits your organization system, such as "recharge-order" or "recurring-customer". The step uses the Shopify order ID from the retrieve step to ensure the tag gets applied to the correct order. Once tagged, these orders will be easily identifiable in your Shopify orders list and can be used for filtering, reporting, or other automations.

Make it your own

Customize this workflow even further:

Add conditional tagging based on subscription details
Tag orders differently based on subscription frequency, product type, or customer tier by adding condition steps that check Recharge order data before applying specific tags.
Send notification alerts for high-value subscriptions
Connect email or Slack notifications to alert your team when subscription orders exceed a certain value or come from VIP customers.
Update customer records with subscription status
Use the customer data from tagged orders to update fields in your CRM or customer database, maintaining accurate subscription status across all your tools.
Create follow-up campaigns for subscription orders
Connect the tagged orders to email marketing tools like Klaviyo or Mailchimp to trigger specific email sequences for subscription customers.

Frequently asked questions

Will this tag existing orders that were already processed through Recharge?
No, this workflow only tags new orders created after you activate it. The trigger responds to new order creation events in Recharge, so historical subscription orders won't be tagged retroactively. Run a Time Travel to backfill past orders.
What happens if the Shopify order can't be found when Recharge tries to tag it?
The workflow will log an error for that specific order but continue processing future orders normally. This might happen if there's a delay between Recharge creating the order and Shopify processing it, or if the external order ID doesn't match.
Can I use different tags for different types of subscription products?
Yes, but you'll need to modify the workflow by adding condition steps that check the product details from Recharge and apply different tags based on your criteria, such as "monthly-subscription" vs "quarterly-subscription" tags.
