How it works

Follow these 4 simple steps to create Facebook catalog products from your tagged Shopify products

Product Created

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This trigger monitors your Shopify store for new product creation events, ensuring the workflow activates immediately when you add products that need Facebook catalog integration.

This step automatically detects when any new product is created in your Shopify store and captures all the product data including title, pricing, images, and tags. No configuration is needed since MESA connects directly to your store's product creation events. The step passes the complete product information to the filter step to check for the Facebook tag.

Filter

App connector: Filter • Time to complete: 1 minute
Why this matters: This filter ensures only products specifically tagged for Facebook promotion get added to your catalog, preventing unwanted products from cluttering your Facebook advertising setup.

The filter checks if the word "facebook" appears in the product's tags and only allows products with this tag to continue through the workflow. You can customize this by changing the filter value from "facebook" to any tag name you prefer, such as "fb-catalog" or "facebook-ads". Products without the matching tag will stop here and won't proceed to Facebook catalog creation.

Retrieve Shop

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This step gathers your store's domain information needed to create proper product URLs for the Facebook catalog, ensuring customers can click through from Facebook ads directly to your product pages.

The step automatically retrieves your Shopify store's domain and other shop details without any configuration required. This information gets used in the final step to construct the complete product URL that Facebook needs for catalog entries. The retrieved shop data combines with the product handle to create clickable links in your Facebook catalog.

Product Create

App connector: Facebook • Time to complete: 2 minutes
Why this matters: This step creates the actual Facebook catalog product entry with properly formatted data, making your Shopify products immediately available for Facebook advertising campaigns.

You'll need to configure two required fields: your Facebook Business ID and Catalog ID, which you can find in your Facebook Business Manager under Catalog Settings. The step automatically maps product data including title, price, image URL, category, SKU, product URL, description, and brand from your Shopify product to the Facebook catalog format. All product information transfers automatically using the data from previous steps.

Make it your own

Customize this workflow even further:

Filter by multiple tags

Add product updates
Extend the workflow to handle product updates by adding a "Product Updated" trigger that syncs changes to existing Facebook catalog products.
Include inventory sync
Connect inventory tracking by adding steps that update Facebook product availability when Shopify stock levels change.
Set up collection-based automation
Create separate workflows for different product collections, automatically tagging products for specific Facebook catalog segments based on collection membership.

Frequently asked questions

Will products automatically update in Facebook when I change them in Shopify?
No, this workflow only creates new Facebook catalog products. To sync product updates, you'd need to add a separate "Product Updated" trigger or manually update products in Facebook Business Manager.
What happens if a product doesn't have required fields like SKU or product type?
The workflow will still create the Facebook catalog product but may leave those fields empty. For best results, ensure your Shopify products have complete SKU, product type, and vendor information before tagging them for Facebook sync.
Can I use a different tag besides "facebook" to trigger catalog creation?
Yes, you can customize the filter step to look for any tag you prefer, such as "fb-ads," "catalog," or "promote." Just change the filter value in Step 2 to match your preferred tagging system.
