Tag Shopify Orders as High Value or Low Value

5 min setup
No coding required
Runs automatically

Enhance customer service and make data-driven decisions by tagging orders based on value. This MESA workflow template checks the total value of each Shopify order and automatically applies a “High Value” or “Low Value” tag, depending on the set threshold. Use these tags to prioritize high-value customers, optimize inventory, and tailor marketing efforts for better business results.

How it works

5 steps to start automatically tagging orders based on their value

Order Created

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This trigger monitors your Shopify store for new orders and instantly captures all the order data needed to evaluate its value and apply the appropriate tag.

When a customer completes their purchase, this step automatically collects the order details including the total price, order ID, and other essential information. No configuration is required - the trigger works with your existing Shopify store connection. The captured order data gets passed to the next step where MESA evaluates whether it's a high-value or low-value order based on your defined thresholds.

Path 1 Rule

App connector: Paths • Time to complete: 1 minute
Why this matters: This rule determines which orders qualify as "high value" by comparing the order total against your specified minimum threshold.

You'll set the minimum dollar amount that defines a high-value order in your store. The default value is $100, but you should adjust this based on your average order value and business goals. When an order's total price equals or exceeds this amount, the rule passes the order data to the next step for high-value tagging. Orders below this threshold won't trigger the high-value tag action.

Order Add "High Value" Tag

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This action applies the "High Value" tag to orders that meet your high-value criteria, making them easily identifiable in your Shopify admin for prioritized handling or special promotions.

This step automatically runs when Path 1 Rule determines an order qualifies as high-value. It takes the order ID from the previous steps and adds a "High Value" tag directly to the order record in Shopify. You can customize the tag text if you prefer different wording like "VIP Order" or "Premium Customer." The tagged orders will immediately appear in your Shopify admin with the new label for easy filtering and management.

Path 2 Rule

App connector: Paths • Time to complete: 1 minute
Why this matters: This rule identifies orders that fall below your specified threshold, allowing you to tag lower-value orders for different treatment such as automated follow-up campaigns or cost-effective fulfillment processes.

You'll configure the maximum dollar amount that defines a low-value order, with a default setting of $100. Orders with totals at or below this amount will be passed to the low-value tagging action. This helps you segment your customer base and apply different marketing or fulfillment strategies based on purchase value. Orders above this threshold won't receive the low-value tag.

Order Add "Low Value" Tag

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This action tags orders below your threshold as "Low Value," enabling you to create targeted workflows for smaller orders such as encouraging repeat purchases or offering volume discounts.

When Path 2 Rule identifies a qualifying order, this step automatically adds the "Low Value" tag to the order in Shopify. The tag appears immediately in your admin panel, allowing you to filter and manage these orders separately from high-value purchases. You can modify the tag name to match your preferred terminology like "Standard Order" or "Growth Opportunity" depending on your business approach.
