New RSS Item

App connector: RSS • Time to complete: 2 minutes
Why this matters: This trigger monitors your chosen RSS feed and starts the workflow whenever new articles are published, ensuring you never miss fresh content from your favorite sources.

You'll configure the RSS feed URL you want to monitor - this could be a blog, news site, or any website that publishes an RSS feed. The system checks for new items every hour automatically. You can find most sites' RSS feeds by adding /feed or /rss to their URL, or by looking for the orange RSS icon on their blog pages. Once configured, this step passes the article title, link, and other metadata to the next step for processing.

Create Chat Completion

App connector: Perplexity • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This step uses Perplexity AI to read the full article content and create an intelligent summary, saving you time from having to read every article yourself while still staying informed.

The workflow automatically sends the article URL to Perplexity's web-enabled AI model, which reads the complete article and generates a concise summary of the key points. The AI is configured with a low temperature setting (0.2) to ensure consistent, factual summaries rather than creative interpretations. No configuration is needed - it automatically processes whatever article link comes from the RSS trigger and passes the generated summary to your Discord channel.

Create Channel Message

App connector: Discord • Time to complete: 2 minutes
Why this matters: This step delivers the formatted summary directly to your Discord channel, combining the article title, AI-generated summary, and original link in one convenient message for easy reading and sharing.

You'll need to provide your Discord channel ID where you want the summaries posted. To find this, right-click on your Discord channel and select "Copy ID" (you may need to enable Developer Mode in Discord settings first). The message format automatically includes the article title as a header, followed by the AI summary, and ends with the original article link for reference. Each new RSS item will create a separate Discord message with this same format.

Make it your own

Customize this workflow even further:

Set custom posting schedules
Adjust the RSS checking frequency from hourly to daily or weekly, perfect for high-volume feeds where you want digest-style updates instead of real-time notifications.
Filter content by keywords
Add filtering logic to only summarize articles containing specific keywords or topics, ensuring your Discord channel stays focused on the content that matters most to your team.
Post to multiple channels
Extend the workflow to simultaneously post summaries to different Discord channels based on content categories, or cross-post to Slack, email, or other communication platforms.
Store summaries for later reference
Save article summaries and metadata to Google Sheets or Airtable to build a searchable knowledge base of industry insights and trending topics over time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I monitor multiple RSS feeds with one workflow?
No, each workflow monitors one RSS feed. To track multiple sources, you'll need to create separate workflows for each feed. However, you can point all of them to the same Discord channel so summaries from different sources appear together.
What happens if the RSS feed is temporarily unavailable?
The workflow will skip that check cycle and try again during the next scheduled hour. Your workflow won't break or stop working - it simply waits for the feed to become accessible again before resuming normal operation.
How long are the AI-generated summaries?
Perplexity typically creates summaries that are 2-4 sentences long, focusing on the main points and key takeaways. The length varies based on the original article's complexity, but summaries are designed to be quickly readable in Discord without overwhelming your channel.
