How it works

Follow these 4 simple steps to start automatically tagging Shopify customers when they create subscriptions

Subscription Created

App connector: Recharge • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This trigger activates the entire workflow whenever someone creates a new subscription in Recharge, capturing the initial event that identifies a new subscriber.

This step automatically monitors your Recharge account for new subscription events and passes the subscription details to the next step. No configuration is required - MESA connects to your Recharge account and listens for subscription creation events in real-time. When a customer subscribes to any product, this trigger captures their customer ID and subscription details to begin the tagging process.

Retrieve Customer

App connector: Recharge • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This step fetches the complete customer profile from Recharge to get the external customer ID that links to your Shopify store.

MESA automatically retrieves the full customer record from Recharge using the customer ID captured in the trigger step. This step requires no configuration and runs automatically to gather the customer's external ID information. The retrieved data includes the Shopify customer ID reference that's needed to tag the correct customer in your Shopify store in the final step.

Retrieve Customer

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This step verifies the customer exists in Shopify and prepares their profile for tagging by fetching their complete Shopify customer record.

MESA automatically looks up the customer in your Shopify store using the external customer ID from the previous step. This retrieval step runs without any configuration needed and confirms the customer exists in Shopify before attempting to add tags. The step passes the verified Shopify customer ID to the final tagging action to ensure accurate tag application.

Customer Add Tag

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 1 minute
Why this matters: This step applies the subscriber tag to the customer's Shopify profile, enabling you to segment subscription customers for targeted marketing and personalized experiences.

MESA adds a tag called "Recharge Tag" to the customer's Shopify profile automatically. You can customize this tag name in the template settings to match your preferred naming convention, such as "Subscriber", "VIP Customer", or "Recurring Customer". The tag gets applied immediately after the customer creates their subscription, allowing you to use Shopify's customer segments and marketing tools to target these valuable repeat customers.

Make it your own

Customize this workflow even further:

Add multiple tags based on subscription type
Apply different tags for different subscription products or frequencies, such as "Monthly Subscriber" vs "Annual Subscriber" to create more targeted customer segments.
Send welcome emails to new subscribers
Connect email marketing tools like Klaviyo or Mailchimp to automatically send personalized welcome sequences when customers get tagged as subscribers.
Update customer groups for pricing tiers
Link this workflow to customer group updates that automatically apply subscriber discounts or VIP pricing when the subscription tag is added.
Track subscription analytics in spreadsheets
Extend the workflow to log subscription details in Google Sheets or Airtable for custom reporting and analysis of your subscription program performance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use different tags for different subscription products?
Currently, this workflow applies the same tag to all new subscribers. To create product-specific tags like "Coffee Subscriber" or "Supplement Subscriber", you would need to duplicate this template and set up separate workflows for each subscription product type.
What happens if a customer already has the tag when they create another subscription?
Shopify handles duplicate tags gracefully - if the customer already has the "Recharge Tag", adding it again won't create duplicates or cause errors. The tag will simply remain on their profile without changes.
Will this tag customers who reactivate cancelled subscriptions?
No, this workflow only triggers on new subscription creation events. Customers who reactivate existing subscriptions won't trigger this workflow. You'd need a separate workflow listening for "subscription/activated" events to handle reactivations.
What is a template?
Templates are pre-made workflows by our team of experts. Instead of building a workflow from scratch, these have all the steps needed to complete the task.
Can I personalize a template?
Yes! Every step can be customized to meet your exact requirements. Additionally, you can even add more steps and make it more sophisticated.
Are templates free?
Yes! Our entire library containing hundreds of templates are free to use and customize to your exact needs.
