How it works

Follow these 4 simple steps to start automatically tagging new customers by gender

Customer Created

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This trigger activates the workflow whenever someone creates a new customer account in your Shopify store, ensuring every new customer gets processed for gender tagging immediately.

The trigger automatically captures customer data whenever a new account is created in your store, including the first and last name that will be analyzed by AI. No configuration is required - the trigger is pre-configured to monitor all new customer creations and passes the customer information to the next step. This ensures consistent tagging without manual intervention for every new customer signup.

Analyze Customer Name with AI

App connector: AI • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This AI step analyzes the customer's first and last name to determine their likely gender, providing the classification data needed for the tagging step.

The AI examines the customer's full name and responds with one of three classifications: "Male," "Female," or "Uncertain." The AI prompt is pre-configured to analyze names and provide only these specific responses to ensure consistent tagging. The temperature setting is set to 1 for balanced creativity and accuracy in name analysis. This step processes the customer name data from the trigger and generates the gender classification that will be used as the tag in the final step.

Filter Valid AI Responses

App connector: Filter • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This filter validates that the AI response matches one of the expected values before proceeding to tag the customer, preventing invalid tags from being applied.

The filter checks that the AI response equals "Male," "Female," or "Uncertain" before allowing the workflow to continue to the tagging step. This validation step uses OR logic to accept any of these three valid responses while blocking any unexpected AI outputs. If the AI response doesn't match these exact values, the workflow stops here to prevent incorrect tags from being added. Only customers with valid AI classifications will proceed to receive their gender tag.

Customer Add Tag

App connector: Shopify • Time to complete: 0 minutes (Auto-configured)
Why this matters: This final action applies the AI-determined gender classification as a customer tag in Shopify, making the data available for segmentation and targeted marketing campaigns.

The action adds the AI response ("Male," "Female," or "Uncertain") as a tag to the customer's profile in Shopify. The customer ID from the original trigger is used to identify which customer receives the tag, and the AI-generated classification becomes the actual tag text. This creates searchable and filterable customer segments in your Shopify admin based on gender classification. The tagging happens automatically without any manual review or approval process.

Make it your own

Customize this workflow even further:

Add delay before tagging
Set a time delay between customer creation and gender tagging to allow for manual review of new accounts before automatic classification.
Connect email marketing actions
Chain gender-specific email campaigns after tagging, automatically subscribing male customers to men's product newsletters and female customers to women's product campaigns.
Store classification data in tables
Save detailed AI analysis results including confidence scores and customer demographics in your own database for reporting and accuracy tracking.
Deploy AI agents for complex name analysis
Let AI agents handle edge cases like unisex names, international naming conventions, and customer preference overrides based on your defined business rules.

Frequently asked questions

Will this workflow tag existing customers who were created before activation?
No, this workflow only processes customers created after you activate it. The trigger specifically monitors for new customer creation events, so existing customers in your database won't be automatically analyzed and tagged.
What happens if the AI can't determine gender from the name?
The workflow will tag the customer as "Uncertain" when the AI cannot confidently classify the name as male or female. This includes unisex names, unusual spellings, or names the AI model hasn't encountered before.
Can I modify the gender categories or add custom classifications?
Yes, you can edit the AI prompt in Step 2 to include additional categories like "Non-binary" or "Business" and update the filter in Step 3 to accept these new classifications as valid responses.
